Product Description

Caraway (Carum carvi) is a biennial shrub of the family Apiaceae (also called Umbelliferae). Caraway is native to Northern Africa, Europe, and Asia. It grows wild in the Himalayan region. A volatile oil from the seeds is typically distilled for herbal remedies. Used around the globe as a culinary spice, it is an ingredient in tabil, an Arabic spice mixture, and the paste harissa, originating in North Africa. It is also a popular flavoring in German cuisine.

Research into caraway supplementation has predominantly focused on the treatment of dyspepsia; however, caraway may also be beneficial for asthma, infant colic, irritable bowel syndrome, and gastroesophageal reflux, and may have bactericidal activity against Helicobacter pylori, although further study is still required. Caraway is a component of the combination product Iberogast®, which is popularly used for functional gastrointestinal disorders. Caraway oil is also marketed as a combination product with peppermint oil. Both caraway and peppermint have been shown to improve gastroduodenal motility. Better-designed clinical trials are needed before conclusions may be drawn regarding the use of caraway for any health condition.
