Butea superba, also called Red Kwao Krua is an herb native to Thailand. Butea Superba, or locally known as Red Kwao Krua in Thailand is a plant herb in the family Papilonaceae. This plant has the characteristics of being a crawling vine that wraps itself around large trees. Many species of this plant exist. Through an arduous research effort two species were selected for commercial cultivation.
The roots and stem of the plant are medicines used for strength and power for centuries, and it has been revered as a health tonic. They are used for medical research, health supplements as well as for beauty treatment.
The tuberous roots of Butea superba were found to contain flavonoids and flavonoid glycosides as well as sterol compounds, including β-sitosterol, campesterol and stigmasterol.
