Tocopheryl acetate, also known as vitamin E acetate, is a common vitamin supplement with the molecular formula C31H52O3(for 'α' form). It is the ester of acetic acid and tocopherol(vitamin E). It is often used in dermatologicalproducts such as skin creams. Tocopheryl acetate is not oxidized and can penetrate through the skin to the living cells, where about 5% is converted to free tocopherol and provides beneficial antioxidant effects.
Tocopheryl acetate is used as an alternative to tocopherol itself because the phenolichydroxyl group is blocked, providing a less acidic product with a longer shelf life. It is believed that the acetate is slowly hydrolyzedonce it is absorbed into the skin, regenerating tocopherol and providing protection against the sun's ultraviolet rays.

1. As an antioxidant, vitamin E acts as a peroxyl radical scavenger, preventing the propagation of free radicals in tissues, by reacting with them to form a tocopheryl radical, which will then be reduced by a hydrogen donor (such as vitamin C) and thus return to its reduced state.
2. Vitamin E also has an effect on gene expression. Macrophages rich in cholesterol are found in the atherogenetic tissue.
3. Vitamin E also plays a role in neurological functions, and inhibition of platelet aggregation
4. Vitamin E also protects lipids and prevents the oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids.
